Students in drawing class

Art (Studio)

Studio art fuels creativity, empowering you to visually shape the world, fostering innovation, and self-expression, igniting limitless possibilities.

Overview

Media taught include drawing, oil painting, photography & digital media, ceramics, and hot glass. The major in studio art culminates in a senior exhibition held in the AEGON Gallery located in the Jones Visual Arts Center.

Students who take art courses find connections between the visual arts and other forms of human expression – anthropological, dramatic, historical, literary, and musical. Every course in the art program enrolls students from a broad variety of other disciplines.

Curriculum

Centre’s art curriculum accommodates those who want to begin a career in the visual arts, those who want to double major, those who want to minor, and those who want to take a course or two. Introductory courses are available in all areas of study.

Experiential Learning

Students engage in hands-on learning experiences and reflection to develop skills and increase knowledge retention.

Visiting artists conduct hands-on demonstrations and lectures that enhance the student experience. Students participate in summer research and internships with faculty. Students attend the Hot Glass Olympics with the University of Louisville. Some of the world's greatest art is available to students who study abroad in England, France, and Mexico.

Internships

We're committed to helping students find quality internship experiences in the career area of their choice.

Students have interned at Gwynn Murrill Sculpture Studio (Los Angeles), Corcoran Museum of Art (D.C.),  San Antonio Museum of Art, Cincinnati Museum of Art, and KMAC, Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft (Louisville).
